For all those saying it is a "Parktown Prawn" - Not even close:

The Parktown Prawn is a species of cricket - The Weta has over 70 species.
Also, I looked up the Jerusalem Cricket - which actually belongs to the same family of the Weta, except they are found in the Western United States, and also Mexico, instead of New Zealand.

ReplyDeleteIt's a Parktown Prawn from South Africa. Harmless. It hisses and it's squirts a black liquid out it's tail when frightened. though I've never seen a light coloured one. generally they're dark reddish blackish.

ReplyDeleteWe had a cat once that used to bring wetas inside and let them go. That was always fun, but at least I wasn't the lucky one to wake up to one walking across my chest.
